I Feel Like Going On...Honoring Reverend James Lawson
Sunday, September 9, 2012 from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM (PDT)
Los Angeles, CA
Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. called Reverend James Lawson "the leading theorist and strategist of nonviolence in the world, and recognized him as one "...who has been in the struggle for many years; he's been to jail for struggling...but he's still going on, fighting for the rights of his people." -April, 1968
On June 23, 2012 the Reverend James Lawson was awarded a Doctorate of Humane Letters at the National Labor College in Silver Spring, MD, and delivered the commencement address, where he told the graduates,
"You and I have the power to change this country…We must not be weary; the best is yet to be…We have an unimaginable possibility to serve ourselves and others. With great joy and enthusiasm, pick up the cudgels of work!"
On Sunday, September 9, 2012, Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace (ICUJP) will present their 2nd Annual George M. Regas Courageous Peacemaker Award to Reverend Lawson at the Holman United Methodist Church sanctuary, where he served as Pastor for many years. In a free 7:30 PM program entitled I Feel Like Going On...Satyagraha, Equality, Liberty and Justice for All, Reverend Lawson will speak on the history of non-violent direct action and how we can use this powerful force to achieve justice and peace. Kent Wong, Director of the UCLA Labor Center and long-time Lawson collaborator, will be the featured speaker.
A special ticketed reception to meet Reverend Lawson and his family will take place at 5:30 PM in the Holman Church White Hall and patio. For more information on and tickets to the reception, go to www.icujp.org/content/regasaward2012.
